Actually I asked the Tarot "What do I need to know about the world in the year 2012" as Tarot is good at giving advice rather than yes or no answers. I would suppose that if the world is going to end as we know it in 2012, cards showing doom and gloom would show up, but in this case I got the 'Eight of Wands', 'The High Priestess' and the 'Knight of Swords'. The deck I am using is the Golden Botticelli Tarot. Now, I am slightly worried about all the hullabaloo about the Mayan calender, solar maximums and flares, pole shifts and what not, but reason tells me that the world ending in 2012 exactly is most unlikely.
Golden Botticelli Tarot
The 'Eight of Wands' is quite a reassuring card because it suggests physical movement and energy, which may mean that the world will keep on turning in 2012 and I will be here doing all the things I would normally do. On the other hand, it may mean that the earth itself will move in a completely new direction so perhaps the earth will shift poles as one dooms day theory suggests. Perhaps the angel with it's aimed bow and arrow implies that meteors and asteroids will rain down on earth. But when all is said and done, this card is a minor 'everyday' card, and not a card of major emphasis which I would expect if the world were going to end!
'The High Priestess' is an interesting card because it can imply emptiness and 'nothingness' or that something that is waiting to happen and will be revealed at some point. It might also mean that something bad is going to happen and the world will come to nothing, or that an unknown threat is going to show up and destroy the earth as we know it. However I look at it, 'The High Priestess' tells me that something will be revealed to me when the time is right!
'The High Priestess' is associated with the Moon which represents the unconscious mind implying that my concerns regarding the future of the earth are rooted deeply in my subconscious. Whether it is something I am unconsciously aware of, or whether it's because I am the worrying type, I am uncertain. The human instinct to live and survive is wired into the subconscious, so we are bound to worry about the future of the earth mother. But I am also inclined to think it is just worry and that 'The High Priestess' in this reading means that the year 2012 will bring unknown potential for me. And if there is potential for me, then the earth will be there to support me so I can reach that potential!
(ETA 08/03/20010) This card is actually the 'Page of Swords', I saw Knave and thought Knight, my bad. The Page of Swords represents problems with thoughts and the action we take, I also to take him as a person who would spread gossip and lies and deliberately try to mess things up!, So perhaps I am going to run into problems in 2012 or, I am going to find out that all the 'end of world gossip', is just that, gossip.
Tarot is a friend to me, it talks to me in my language, not in complicated symbols, or hidden meaning. Tarot will advise me in a way I will understand it, which is why I haven't not taken these cards to portray more than just a simple of idea of what to expect in 2012.
So all in all, there are is no 'Death', 'Devil', 'Judgement', 'Tower', or 'Moon' which are all cards that might hint at the world ending in 2012, There are no minor arcana cards of heartbreak, regret, loss, martyrdom, grief, or poverty.
These cards cards don't go into any detail at all. They simply suggest that I will be running around doing all the things I want to do (Eight of Wands, Knight of Swords), Exactly what i'll be doing I won't know until 2012 because the future is only the outcome of my actions leading up to it (High Priestess).
(ETA 08/03/20010) These cards don't go into any detail at all. The first thing I thought when I turned the 'Eight of Wands' was "phew, things are going to carry on as normal". The 'High Priestess' tells me that my intuition is correct, my gut feeling being that we will be just fine and dandy. While the 'Page of Swords', tells me that the end of times gossip, is just gossip.
UPDATE 06/03/2010 09:42
I have received this very interesting idea about the 'High Priestess'...
"Muse, after reading your reply another thought popped into my head. The year begins and ends with "2" and the major trump you got is 2! The High Priestess. How do you get to 2? well, you count "0, 1, 2." There we have 2012. So maybe the Priestess has more to do with that year than I would have thought. What that really means I do not know."
A recent Tarot reading has made me realise that the 'Eight of Wands' can literally mean 'to receive news', and I have realised the Knave of Swords is actually the equivalent to the 'Page of Swords' in the Golden Botticelli deck (my bad!!). I would literally take the 'Page of Swords' to mean problems with the way we are thinking, or the way we are handling or taking action against something.
So, these cards might read as....I shall receive news (Eight of Wands), in 2012 (High Priestess), that there is a problems with my idea that the world will end that year? (Page of Swords).

I read over your interpretations and began to worry a little. Maybe I'll do a reading on this and see the outcome.
This part of your interpretation stood out to me. "earth shifting on axis" this would be a disaster, I believe."nothingness" "changing mind and rushing into challenges" Well, if the earth shifting on it's axis it may not end but it would definitely change things and possibly nothingness in areas and we would be scrambling around trying to figure out what to do.
Hey Cher, I didn't mean to worry you. I made that interpretation a little dramatic and with the assumption that the reader would be aware of the various doomsday rumours that are flying about!
The thing is, that as soon as I read your comment I realised that I was sure that the world was not going to end in 2012. Well not in 2012 *exactly*! My gut feeling relates to the card of the High Priestess, which confirms that I should trust my intuition in this instance - that I will be running around and doing things as normal!
As I said in my post, I would expect to see certain cards to start thinking that there was disaster ahead and there weren't any at all. In fact I found them quite boring and slightly humorous! And when we are so biased towards this particular question, we could go on forever at guessing what the cards mean!
Anyway my point is, that while I tried to give a good interpretation, I wasn't taking the whole thing too seriously, and I hope you don't either :)

Lol, no worries. I believe in fate and destiny among other things. Even if it were to end, that would be what was meant to be.
Thanks for sharing, Muse - this has certainly given me food for thought. The year numerology of 2012 is 5, i.e. the male counterpart of the High Priestess... yet her number shows up TWICE in that year... I intuit that a lot of the changes we will see in the next couple of years have to do with the imbalance between male/female - yin/yang... The activity in the earths magnetic field is a reflection of this. I believe we need to look deeper at integrating the male and female energies in order to fully embody the divine and restore order on the planet. As you rightly said, all that we need to know will be revealed in time. There is also a possiblity that there will be TWO major cataclysms to do with the oceans in 2012. One possibilty is that there will be a couple of tectonic shifts that cause flooding. Looking at it on an elemental level we would have the Fire power of the earth core moving (8 of Wands) the Oceans (II The High Priestess), causing a need for mankind to rethink and address the imbalance (Page of Swords).
Hello ;-)
check out the numerology behind the date: 21/12/2012. When you connect the numbers to the Tarot, you get Trump 21 (The World), 12 (Hanged Man), 0 (Fool), 1 (Magician), 20 (Judgement) and 2 (High Priestess). Add up all the numbers of the date and you get trump 11 (Justice).
All these cards make sense to me. There's a completion of a cycle (World), a need for sacrifice (Hanged Man) after evaluation (Judgement) and adjustment (Justice). Perhaps getting back to basics & a new start (Fool). HP and Magician (trump 1 & 2) suggest opposites to be integrated into a new World order (no. 21 = combining trump 1 + 2 numerically). There's also an interesting connection to the lost manuscripts of Nostradamus, who came up with the same numbers and similar symbols as found on the tarot card images of the above trumps. Currently working on a blog post about this....

I read your spread as a quickening (8W) of our spiritual (HP) and thought (KS) patterns. Which says to me that it just means some sort of spontaneous evolution is going to take place and we will re-think what we believe and do as a result of our beliefs.
Also, when we approach 2012 as "the world is coming to an end", I always feel a need to clarify and say the world will be fine. Gaia will be fine. She may have to kill us in order for that to happen, but she'll be fine. In less than 100,000 years (a blink of an eye to her), she'll have mended all the damage we've done. We should worry about ourselves, not her.
I cannot help but see the High Priestess as a benevolent character in the tarot, I know she has her shadowy sides but for me she always points to spiritual guidance, intuition and following my instinct.
Eight Wands could be things happening fast, unexpected developments or news and the page of swords for me is someone who is a bit rebellious and very sharp-witted, a quick thinker and a keen critic.
So to me it says we should expect the unexpected by relying on our instincts and feelings and being critical with what we hear and see. I don't believe in a future that is written in stone. The future is dynamic and it's in our hands to shape it. Doomsaying never helped anyone. Around the turn of the century (I'm talking 1900 here) people thought the world as they knew it would end - and maybe they were right because the world started to develop into a very different direction politically and economically. Countless people believed in Y2K wiping out the civilisation. Never happened. 2012 is just another of those days. I mean...the way we are treating the world and we are treating each other makes it very likely that the world as we know it WILL come to an end sooner or later. So what if it happens to be 2012? I'll just try my best to contribute to making a better world and we'll see what happens. I try to treat my fellow human beings with respect and avoid parting on bad terms because I always think every word you say to someone could theoretically be the last. But that doesn't mean I am pessimistic about life. If it is meant to happen in 2012, so be it. I don't really want to know because I don't think that knowledge will help.
